Beat the Heat: Summer Care Tips for Your Midwest Landscape
Friday, July 10, 2026 | TipsAs the summer heat and unpredictable Midwest weather continue, keeping your landscape thriving can feel like a moving target. Whether you’ve recently added new green additions or you’re maintaining an established garden, a little strategic care goes a long way.
The Schmittel team put together this quick guide to help you care properly for your trees, shrubs, and perennials during this hot, stormy stretch.
🌿 Water Early, Deep—& Only When Needed
Check your soil first—if it’s dry a few inches down, it’s time to water. Morning is best for a deep soak, 1–2 times per week.🌸 Deadhead + Prune
Remove spent blooms to encourage new flowers, and give shrubs a light trim if they’ve finished flowering.🥵 Mulch Matters
Replenish mulch to help retain moisture and regulate soil temps—especially during this hot, stormy stretch.🌱 Go Easy on Fertilizer
High heat can stress plants. If needed, apply a slow-release or organic fertilizer early in the day and water it in well.🍅 Harvest Regularly
Pick fruits, veggies, and herbs as they ripen to keep your plants producing (and your meals fresh!).
