Celebrate World Bee Day with Schmittel’s Nursery!
Tuesday, May 20, 2025 | UpdatesToday is World Bee Day, and we’re celebrating the native bees of Missouri — hardworking pollinators that help our gardens thrive and our food systems survive.
Unlike honeybees, many native bees (like bumblebees, mason bees, and sweat bees) are solitary and often nest in the ground or hollow stems. Missouri is home to over 450 species of native bees, and each plays a unique role in pollinating wildflowers, fruits, and vegetables.
Want to support them? Your garden can help!
At Schmittel’s Nursery, we’re featuring a variety of pollinator-friendly native perennials and trees perfect for Missouri landscapes, including:
Perennials:
-
Bee Balm
-
Butterfly Milkweed
-
Black-Eyed Susan
Trees:
-
Linden
-
Serviceberry
-
Black Gum
These plants offer nectar, pollen, and habitat — and they’re beautiful, too.
The nursery is buzzing with activity!
The plants pictured here — Althea (Blue Chiffon), petunias, citrus trees, and purple showers — are currently blooming and attracting pollinators like crazy. While these aren’t all native, they’re great for nectar and bee-watching right now!
Stop by the nursery to explore our selection (while supplies last – call or visit to confirm availability). Together, we can create spaces that support bees, butterflies, and all the pollinators we rely on.
